Balayage vs Highlights: Which Is Right for You?

Both create beautiful dimension, but balayage and highlights are applied very differently and suit different hair goals. Here's how to choose.

The Core Difference

Highlights are applied using foils, with color painted in sections and processed uniformly from root to tip — giving a more structured, consistent pattern. Balayage is hand-painted freehand directly onto the hair with no foils, creating a softer, more graduated, sun-kissed effect that grows out much more naturally.

Balayage: Pros and Cons

  • Pros: low maintenance (grows out naturally without harsh regrowth lines), soft and natural-looking, great for a lived-in, effortless vibe.
  • Cons: less uniform/structured look, not ideal if you want bold, consistent stripes of color throughout.

Highlights: Pros and Cons

  • Pros: more consistent, noticeable dimension throughout the whole head, great for a brighter, more uniform transformation.
  • Cons: regrowth is more visible sooner, needs more frequent touch-ups to maintain the look.

Which Should You Choose?

If you want something low-maintenance that still looks great as it grows out, balayage is usually the better fit. If you want a bolder, more even color change and don't mind touch-ups every 6-8 weeks, highlights deliver that more directly.
